  2. There are three biblical passages concerning the priestly vestments:
    1. The instructions for the garments (Ex 28:1-43).
    2. The preparation of the garments (Ex 39:1-31).
    3. The investiture of the garments (Le 8:5-9).

    A threefold purpose is discernible:
    1. Decorative--This was most essential since the appearance of the high priest was to convey the beauty and authority that belonged to God himself.
    2. Functional--The breeches, for example, were for the sake of modesty (Ex 28:42).
    3. Symbolic--The 12 precious stones of the breastpiece of judgment represented the 12 tribes of Israel. When wearing this article, the high priest bore the names of the tribes to bring them to continual remembrance before the Lord (Ex 28:29).

There are seven articles of clothing:

    1. 褲子Breeches--This particular garment (Ex 28:42) was to assure the modesty demanded of the priest when officiating at the altar (20:26). This tells us that the flesh counts for nothing; the words God tells us is the spirit (Joh 6:63).

    2. 內袍Tunic--This item was to be worn under the outer garment. Made of linen, it was to have a checked design, indicating either an open texture or a variegation of colors (Ex 28:39). Its white color represents a need to become pure and blameless children of God.

Girdle--This was a kind of linen sash, essential to a flowing garment, to assure warmth and maneuverability. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms (1Pe 4:10).

    4. 外袍Robe of the Ephod (Ex 28:31-34)--The first "over" piece to be put on was the robe. The skirts of this robe were fringed with alternating woolen pomegranates and golden bells. Pomegranates were used for decorative purposes. (1 Ki 7:20, 42). This fruit was also popular as a fertility symbol because of its many seeds, suggesting incomparable fruitfulness.

Ephod (Ex 28:6-12)--It was fastened to the body by two shoulder straps and a belt with which it was lined. Upon the shoulder straps were two onyx stones, on which the names of the sons of Israel were engraved in the order of their birth. These two onyx stones, called "stones of remembrance," were to symbolize God shouldered lost sheep. He urged us to encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone (1Th 5:14).

Breastpiece (Ex 28:15-30). Chains of braided gold and golden rings with loops of blue secured the breastpiece in position. Its primary purpose was to contain the sacred lot, the Urim and Thummim. By wearing them above his heart, Aaron would indicate that justice originates with God and would remind God to maintain the administration of justice in Israel. It’s also like God’s calling His own sheep by name and leading them out (Joh 10:3).

Turban (Ex 28:36-38). Attached to this turban was a plate of pure gold on which were engraved the words "Holy to the Lord." This gold plate was equivalent to a diadem or crown, symbolizing the regal splendor of the high priest.

All in all, if we want to live a glorious and beautiful life, we should follow the way God instructs us to dress ourselves.

  4. Dear all, Peng An,
Yeah, JBC was fast to refer to the pastors of HoPing. I had to confess that I could not even bear the heat of the black overcoat during summer time, that I had to raise the issue of pastor dressing during preaching and to ask the elder board to allow the pastor the option to wear only thin and short and light colored upper dressing... but I dared not to even mention whether it was permissible to wear short pant, as it would be even cooler without the long pant legs....
I liked Mou for his easily linking the bible content to his personal life experience. This was very good practice as to make our daily devotion more relevant to our own personal lives.
Thanks to YiTing for your detailed enlisting of the seven pieces of the high priest dressings. It definitely was very helpful to read such reviews...
